The French press is one of the most original and purist methods of coffee preparation. No filters, no machine – just water, coffee, and a moment of peace. At CALDAS Coffee, this mindful enjoyment is at the heart of everything we do.
Here we show you step by step how to perfectly prepare your French Press coffee according to our recommendations – full-bodied, aromatic and authentic.
Why French Press?
The French press is ideal for anyone who:
- love intense, aromatic coffee
- want to feel the natural oils of the bean
- appreciate a simple yet high-quality preparation
- Enjoying coffee as a ritual and a conscious moment
With the right technique, the French Press unfolds the full depth of our CALDAS single-origin coffees from Colombia – from chocolatey notes to fruity accents.
1. Equipment (Caldas recommendation)
- French press (0.35 l / 0.5 l / 1 l)
- Freshly roasted CALDAS Coffee
- Coarse to medium grind (like coarse sea salt)
- Precision scale
- timer
- High-quality hand mill or electric mill with discs
- kettle or boiler
- spoon or spatula
- Cup or thermos/serving carafe for transferring liquids
2. Basic recipe
Standard brewing rate:
- 👉 1 : 13 – corresponds to approximately 75 g of coffee per liter of water
- Approximately 26 g of coffee for 0.35 l (French Press Small)
Taste adjustment:
- Stronger: slightly increase the dosage (still 1:13)
- Milder: 1 : 17–18
This ratio brings out the typical notes of Colombian Arabicas particularly well.
3. Water quality & temperature
Coffee is 98 percent water – that's why we use:
- fresh, filtered water
- 92–96 °C (Let water stand for 30–60 seconds after boiling)
This ensures that the natural flavors remain stable and balanced.
4. Preparation – Step by Step
1. Preheating
Preheat the pot and plunger with hot water, then pour.
→ Ensures a more stable brewing temperature.
2. Grinding
Grind coarsely to medium coarsely.
Important: Consistency over coarseness – uniform particles ensure a clean cup.
3. Blooming – the pre-well-up
Pour in coffee and moisten with twice the amount of water.
(e.g. 40 g water for 20 g coffee).
Allow to soak for 10-15 seconds.
→ Opens the coffee and intensifies the aroma.
4. Pour in completely.
Fill to the target quantity and stir gently once.
Place the stamp on the surface, but do not press down .
5. Brewing time: 4:00 minutes
Close the lid, start the timer, and leave the pot to stand still.
6. Press gently
Press the stamp down evenly for 15–30 seconds .
Don't squeeze all the way to the bottom.
7. Serve immediately
Pour the coffee directly into a container to prevent further extraction.
→ Otherwise it will become bitter and over-extracted.
8. Conscious enjoyment
Calda's tip:
Put your phone away, take a deep breath and consciously experience the first sip.
Conclusion
The French press is a simple method with impressive results. With the right dosage, temperature, and brewing time, you'll get a full-bodied, natural coffee that perfectly captures the essence of our CALDAS beans.
Whether a fruity single-origin variety or a stronger coffee – the French press brings the full potential of the bean into your cup.
