Filter coffee is one of the clearest, most elegant, and most aromatic ways to prepare coffee. The paper filter produces a clean cup, delicate acidity, and a particularly complex flavor profile.
At CALDAS Coffee, we love this method because it precisely and transparently highlights the characteristic notes of our Colombian single-origin coffees.
Here you will learn step by step how to prepare high-quality filter coffee like a barista – simply, consciously and full of flavor.
Why filter coffee?
Filter coffee is perfect for anyone who:
- Clarity, lightness and delicate aromas are preferred
- want to experience fruity and floral notes
- appreciate a simple yet precise method
- want to truly appreciate specialty coffee
Especially Calda's varieties such as Pink Bourbon, Caturra or Geisha unfold their full potential here – structured, bright and elegant.
1. Equipment (Caldas recommendation)
- Hand filter (e.g. V60, Kalita Wave or similar)
- Paper filters suitable for the dripper
- Freshly roasted CALDAS filter coffee
- Mill (preferably with a disc grinder)
- Kettle, ideally with a gooseneck spout
- Scale
- timer
- Serving jug or cup
2. Basic recipe
Standard brewing rate:
👉 1 : 16 – corresponds
- 62.5 g of coffee per 1 liter of water
- Approximately 13 g of coffee for 200 ml
- Approximately 20g of coffee for 320ml (typical V60-01 amount)
Flavor variations:
- Stronger: 1 : 15
- Milder: 1 : 17–18
3. Water quality & temperature
For a clear, clean aroma:
- Use filtered water
- 92–95 °C is ideal
- Light, fresh water accentuates fruity and floral flavor notes.
4. Preparation – Step by Step
1. Fold and preheat the filter
Insert paper filter, rinse thoroughly with hot water.
→ Removes paper taste & preheats drippers.
2. Grinding
Grind coffee to a medium-fine grind – finer than for French press, coarser than for espresso.
Consistency similar to coarse sand.
3. Blooming – Pre-springs
Pour coffee into the filter.
Pour twice the amount of water over the coffee (e.g., 40g of water for 20g of coffee).
Wait 20-30 seconds.
→ Dissolves gases, opens the coffee and ensures even extraction.
4th main infusion
Pour in a circular, calm motion until the target amount is reached.
Total brewing time: 2:30 to 3:30 minutes , depending on the grind.
5. Let it rest
Once the water has completely run through:
Remove the filter – do not squeeze it.
6. Serve
Pour into a cup or carafe and enjoy immediately.
Aromas & ideal moment of enjoyment
Filter coffee accentuates the delicate, fruity and complex aromas of our CALDAS coffees.
Pink Bourbon, Caturra and Geisha show particularly:
- Citrus notes
- floral accents
- berry sweetness
- light, clear structure
Our tip:
Allow to cool for at least 1 minute – only then will the full aroma develop.
Conclusion
Filter coffee is the ideal method to fully experience the characteristic qualities of specialty coffee. With the right brewing ratio, the perfect grind, and a steady hand, you can create a clean, aromatic, and elegant cup of coffee – perfect for anyone who wants to discover the full potential of CALDAS Coffee.
